The Vinegar Valley Express

The Vinegar Valley Express was a rail car built by the McCloud River Lumber Company. It was built to move 150 Lumberjacks from the small towns of Pondosa and Kinyon to the work sites. Pondosa and Kinyon are located about fifteen miles from the McCloud Mercantile.

They say it wasn't a pleasant ride after working all day. One hundred and fifty smelly workers with a smelly 4 cylinder engine.

The rail car was eventually abandoned as you can see it in the middle of this photo of the camp town of Kinyon. This is where the car can still be found although the elements and time haven't' treated the old car to well and there isn't much left of Kinyon.

Ice Skating Mount Shasta

Castle Lake is located in Siskiyou County about 20 miles from the McCloud Mercantile. Castle Lake freezes over in the winter and usually gets covered in snow. December 2011 was one of the driest in many years so there is no snow on Castle Lake making for some great ice skating.  Ice fishing is always a great time for those a little less adventures.

McCloud CA, Squaw Valley Riding Club

The Squaw Valley Riding Club is on Highway 89 just a few blocks from Main Street McCloud and the McCloud Mercantile Hotel. Located at the base of Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County California, it has been a fixture in the community since 1939.

The Horsemans is a private club that includes the main clubhouse and 15 horse barns. Members can purchase a barn from the club and stable their horse. Because of the typical snow conditions it's hard to clean the corrals in the winter and requires a big spring clean up each year. April is a good month to clean the stalls, the snow is melted and the ground is drying out. My horse is named Dollar and he is almost 30 years old, we have been through a lot together.

The Horseman's has a number of public events that everyone is welcome to attend such as the Dutch Oven Cook Off, Saturday June 4, 2010. If your in McCloud during one of these events come and join us and don't forget to visit the McCloud Mercantile Store and stay at the Mercantile Hotel a Mount Shasta Hotel.
